A novel digital health pathway enables healthcare technologies for gait and falls in Parkinson’s disease

moveIT improves healthcare for patients of Parkinson’s disease via wearable gait and fall sensors combined as a novel healthcare service by an innovative digital health pathway (DHP). The DHP defines the clinical application of these new technologies for stratified patient cohorts and multidisciplinary healthcare networks targeting gait and falls in PD.

Objectives

Parkinson’s disease (PD), a chronic movement disorder characterised by progressive gait impairment, is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder, affecting 10 million patients worldwide, with increasing prevalence in western societies. Gait impairment and falls greatly reduce quality of life for PD patients, lead to severe comorbidities and cause substantial healthcare costs.

Scientific evidence shows that adequate treatment may increase mobility, reduce risk of falling, prevent falls, and reduce costs. However, technologies to comprehensively monitor gait and falls are not available, or fail to qualify as a medical service or product, and can therefore not be applied clinically in multidisciplinary healthcare concepts to improve PD patient mobility.

The moveIT project will implement the first comprehensive gait and fall assessment battery integrated into a multidisciplinary healthcare concept, driven and organised by an innovative digital health pathway for gait and falls in PD. Existing well-characterised patient cohorts and state-of-the-art healthcare concepts will be used in a Living Lab to develop, test, and validate sensor-based movement assessments for application in clinical studies and patient care, ultimately preventing falls by moving PD healthcare into digital health.

Target Group

The innovative digital health pathway for gait and falls in PD enables the placement of new digital health products and services, improves personalised patient care and reduces costs. moveIT targets the 1.2 million PD patients in Europe (with €14 billion annual healthcare costs), healthcare providers and payers, pharma companies, and medtech companies.
