Connecting Data in European Intensive Care
The Challenge
Healthcare innovation in intensive care units (ICUs) is hindered by fragmented data, a lack of standardised sharing agreements, and limited secure infrastructure. These challenges became especially apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, when even fundamental questions—such as the number of ventilated ICU patients—were difficult to answer.
Project Overview
INDICATE is a European initiative developing a federated infrastructure to enable secure, cross-border access to ICU data. This privacy-by-design approach ensures that patient data remains within hospitals while enabling AI-driven insights that support personalised medicine, disaster preparedness, and improved patient care.
Objectives
INDICATE aims to:
- Facilitate secure ICU data sharing across Europe
- Promote ethically responsible data use
- Develop and implement trustworthy AI models
- Improve patient outcomes through data-driven healthcare
