Two promising projects or start-ups have been selected after the first evaluation cut-off date
After the first evaluation cut-off date on 3rd March 2017, the German Co-Location Center (CLC) of EIT Health announced two winners of the German EIT Health Head Start Programme 2017 in mid May. The two were selected from 23 eligible project proposals by external reviewers evaluating three categories: Project Excellence; Commercialisation Potential and Market Strategy; Project Impact.
The Head Start Programme provides fast-track project opportunities with a focus on German or Swiss micro and small enterprises (<50 employees), spin-offs and start-ups, funded to rapidly initiate their activities. With a funding of up to € 50,000 for a maximum of one year the grant supports the applicants in realizing next steps towards the market for innovative products and services. In addition, the successful applicants get access to a European network of world leading medtech, biotech, pharma and IT companies as well as world class research organizations in health care and top universities. They will benefit from unique services in crucial areas such as clinical validation (living labs and test beds), market preparation and internationalization provided in EIT Health Accelerator programmes such as GoGlobal (MedTech and Digital) or Launchlab. The winners will get early access to the EIT Health Investors Network, which brings international investors together (VCs, Corporate VCs, Business Angels, Crowd Investors) in order to boost the winner’s business idea and to support the participants to increase their visibility across Europe.

Project Title: EmergencyEye – Smart digital technologies optimizing emergency communication between people and professional services with focus on health and prevention.
Name of Organisation: Corevas GmbH & Co. KG
Brief description: EmergencyEye (EmEye) aims to provide fast, comprehensive and correct information from an emergency situation to the emergency control center. This will significantly improve the ability of the emergency dispatchers to understand the situation, correctly diagnose the problem, make optimal decisions and support the person delivering first-aid. In this way the project aims to save lives, especially in situations where speed of help is particularly critical, e.g. in the need of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. To achieve this, EmEye will make use of the full functionality of the widely available smart phone infrastructure: EmEye will be the first system on the market to provide a package of phone call, live video streaming and GPS tracking in case of a 112 emergency call via smartphone. EmEye will be available as an App for the public. However, the main invention of EmEye is the dispatcher functionality, providing full control over the flow of information. Thus, the sol ution works as a stand-alone feature, ensuring immediate service to all citizens, agnostic of any existing and future apps. The project phase covers the technical development (app for citizens and remote access tool for control centers).
Project Title: SmartQoL – Intelligent wearable system for health monitoring and automatic detection of emergency situations
Name of Organisation: QoLware (QoL – Quality of Life)
Brief description: Right now, in Germany over 20 million people are at high risk of suffering health-related emergencies, including chronic patients and seniors at stationary and ambulant care. In case of serious emergency situations, the ability to summon help quickly and provide dispatchers with accurate context information can make the difference between life and death. Qolware’s solution consists of a smartwatch application able to identify critical health situations through the detection of abnormal patterns in a person’s physiological signals and automatically ask for help. Physiological signals, such as heart rate, body temperature or physical activity, are unobtrusively recorded using consumer electronics smartwatches and analyzed by means of machine learning-based algorithms. This application is also able to monitor health status, detecting early signs of disease and functional mobility loss, helping clinicians tailoring individual interventions for their patients and providing users with feedback to encourage changes towards a healthier lifestyle. Qolware’s solution supports patients with severe chronic disease and frail seniors to live autonomously and safely for as long as possible and provides peace of mind to their beloved ones. The project SmartQoL aims to validate the functional stability, user acceptance and integration with a professional emergency dispatcher in a real environment prior to market launch.
The next evaluation cut-off date will be on 16 June 2017 and German or Swiss start-ups and SMEs can send their project proposals by then. A flyer about the German Head Start Call 2017 can be found here.
