New Value Catalyst Community aims to drive value-based healthcare implementation

29th October 2024

EIT Health Belgium-Netherlands is excited to announce our involvement in the newly formed Value Catalyst Community—an international initiative aimed at advancing value-based healthcare (VBHC) implementation across hospitals worldwide. This community brings together nine leading hospitals, all committed to learning from each other and sharing best practices to drive healthcare delivery improvements focused on outcomes that matter most to patients.

A Global Effort for Organisational Change

Despite the growing popularity of VBHC, many hospitals face challenges in implementing its principles—such as establishing Integrated Practice Units (IPUs), optimising care pathways, and utilising real-world evidence. The Value Catalyst Community focuses on helping hospitals make the transition to VBHC by fostering collaboration around organisational redesign, cultural shifts, and change management. Through this learning community, hospitals will share experiences and best practices, accelerating the implementation of VBHC and its impact on patient care.

The initiative is chaired by Prof. Dr. Paul van der Nat, Manager and Professor of VBHC at St. Antonius Hospital, and includes international experts like Eva Villalba (Canada) and Marcia Makdisse (Brazil). Together, they focus on essential elements such as outcome measurement, care innovation, and collaborative learning, helping hospitals transform their care delivery systems.

Last week, the in-person kick-off event took place at St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, following the ICHOM conference in Amsterdam. During the event, participants toured the hospital, including a visit to the emergency department, where they observed firsthand how staff-identified challenges have led to practical, patient-centred innovations. One highlight was a self-guided vital signs monitor in the emergency department waiting room, a simple yet impactful tool that reduces triage time and significantly improves patient flow. Reflecting on this solution, Akvile Zalatoryte, Collaboration lead, EIT Health Belgium-Netherlands noted, “Seeing this innovation in action, we couldn’t help but wonder why such accessible, cost-effective technology isn’t yet standard practice in emergency departments everywhere!”

Why EIT Health Belgium-Netherlands Is Involved

Our participation in the Value Catalyst Community aligns with our ongoing mission to advance VBHC and improve patient outcomes across Europe. In 2020, EIT Health published the Think Tank report, “Implementing Value-Based Healthcare in Europe: Handbook for Pioneers,” which provides a framework for measurable health outcomes and cost efficiencies in healthcare. Directed by Prof. Gregory Katz from the University of Paris, the handbook outlines key steps for health services to implement VBHC and realize its full potential.

As a partner in this initiative, we continue to support hospitals in adopting VBHC methodologies, fostering international collaboration, and driving forward a much-needed shift in medical culture. Through these efforts, we aim to reshape healthcare systems to better serve patients and healthcare providers alike.
