Training Course in Clinical Abdominal Ultrasound

TrainR4U is a robot-assisted blended learning programme in abdominal ultrasound aiming to improve the skills of physicians to provide more effective, safer, and faster abdominal ultrasounds.

The programme consists of theoretical and practical classes taught by internationally recognised experts and relies on innovative telemedicine technology. From our programme, students will be able to identify barriers, assess comfort with the machine, interpret images, and incorporate knowledge into clinical practice. The objective of this Training Course in Clinical Abdominal Ultrasound is to capacitate current and future health professionals to acquire/improve skills on that imaging technique. A conclusion certification is awarded by the University of Coimbra, with a value of 1.5 ECTS.

Eligibility Requirements

This programme is open to:

  • Physicians and medical interns from the following specialties: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care (ICU), and Geriatrics
  • Resident physicians and clinicians who use ultrasound in their daily practice
  • Medical students and professionals enrolled in imaging or radiology-related programs

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have completed basic medical training relevant to the course content
  • Provide accredited documentation of academic or professional experience involving routine use of ultrasound diagnosis
  • Submit a letter of commitment to attend the course
  • Medical students and imaging professionals should meet the following prerequisites: Completed coursework in: Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and Introduction to Physics

As the course is fully delivered in English, participants must have a good command of the language (recommended minimum level: B1).

Teaching Process and Grading

  • Teaching process is based on monitoring the work of learners – appropriation of content, clarification of doubts, and carrying out individual and group activities
  • Students will perform tasks related to the ultrasound exploration of the abdomen to recognize anatomical structures or make a simple measurement of an organ or part of it. Immediate feedback will be given by the teacher with a demonstration of procedures.
  • Participants’ confidentiality will be guaranteed by signing a confidentiality agreement upon registration.
  • Students will perform a final test on the theoretical and practical concepts acquired.
  • Activities will be classified on a scale from 0 to 20 values, with the final grade being the arithmetic average of the theoretical component and the practical component in equal parts
