Healthcare Training @ P3-Stroke

14th August 2019

Improving stroke management and cardiac procedures with multimodal imaging

In clinical interventions, image-based diagnosis and guidance are key factors for a successful outcome. To ensure safety and efficiency, extensive know-how and skill is required. Especially in the case of multimodal imaging, the amount of information is immense and all modalities as well as their interplay have to be well understood. To this end, detailed and continuous training events are carried out as part of P3-Stroke.

P3-Stroke focuses on specific pathways to improve stroke management and cardiac procedures, such as electrophysiology for treatment of cardiac arrhythmia.

A team involving University Clinics Erlangen, University Erlangen, KU Leuven, Coimbra Health School, Université de Bordeaux, and Siemens Healthineers are developing new solutions for multimodal, image-guided interventions.

The project consortium has developed a range of training initiatives including workshops, webinars, courses and MOOCs, which are offered to interested participants such as health professionals, medical physicists and engineers.

In October 2017, the first workshop took place at IPC – ESTESC (Coimbra Health School, Portugal) with the topic “Radiation Protection for Fluoroscopy-Guided Procedures”. Presentations were given by a wide range of experts from ESTESC, the Medical Faculty of the University of Coimbra, Siemens Healthineers, and the Universities of Erlangen, Leuven, and Lisbon.

The talks covered topics ranging from X-ray generation and their effect on biologic tissue towards image formation and processing options, as well as their applications in image-guided fluoroscopy. A successive workshop on “Cardiac MRI and cardiac interventions” is scheduled for 5 November 2018, in Bordeaux. In addition Coimbra Health School is organising a series of P3-Stroke training webinars focusing on multimodality imaging and image-guided interventions.

Information on upcoming webinars and registration can be found here.

At the University of Bordeaux, practical courses cover the role of cardiac imaging to guide and facilitate cardiac ablation procedures. With focus on stroke treatment, the University Clinics Erlangen organised a hands-on course for endovascular therapies. Last but not least, vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists received practical training on radiation protection at KU Leuven. Next to training surgeons and interventional radiologists/cardiologists, KUL has also planned in depth training for medical physicists.

We are convinced that the introduction of new technologies has to be preceded by appropriate education in order to make the most out of it. To this end, the P3-Stroke teaching activities will continue to be an important focus of P3-Stroke.
