International EIT Health Workshop promotes projects in data-driven innovation
EIT Health and MIRACUM collaborated on a workshop that gathered around 80 international participants, who discussed challenges and opportunities in real-world data in healthcare.
On 22 February 2018, EIT Health Germany co-organised the International EIT Health Workshop on “Real World Data in Healthcare” together with ETH Zürich, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Roche Diagnostics GmbH and Siemens Healthineers, in collaboration with MIRACUM (Medical Informatics in Research and Care in University Medicine) both hosted in Erlangen. The event attracted more than 80 international participants (from Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands) to discuss needs and challenges in real-world evidence for new health products and services.
The participants of the Real World Data in Healthcare Workshop and the MIRACUM Symposium had the opportunity to share ideas and exchange information with a combined number of participants of nearly 300 during the breaks. Partners from EIT Health Germany, who joined the event, included for example AbbVie, Bayer, Bio-M, DKFZ, ETH Zürich, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Roche Diagnostics GmbH, SAP, Siemens Healthineers, and TUM.
Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Klucken from University Hospital Erlangen moderated the event in an inspiring way that demonstrated his passion for improving patients’ experience and outcomes. Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch, Faculty of Medicine, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg together with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Schüttler, Dean of the Medical Faculty of FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, opened the event by highlighting how informatics and technology can help to leverage the value of real-world data in healthcare. “We need to enhance cross-country healthcare collaboration and data mobility to support future innovative healthcare solutions” – emphasized Dr. Katharina Ladewig, Managing Director of EIT Health Germany and EIT Health UK-Ireland in her welcoming speech.
A highlight of the day was the impressive keynote speech by Dr. Melvin Olson, Global Head of Real World Evidence & Innovation of Novartis on “Leveraging Real World Data to Improve Outcomes in Healthcare”. By showing strengths and weaknesses of data collection and data analysis, he explained the role of a pharma company and the importance of shifting the business model for outcome-based healthcare. Other topics covered during the day included, for example, data ownership, data privacy and security, patient engagement, and artificial intelligence.
During short-talks on data analytics and the legal framework, speakers from the University Hospital Groningen, Biotx.ai, DFKI, Siemens Healthineers, INRIA and KU Leuven showed their perspectives on real-world data in healthcare and how their organisations can contribute to finding new solutions to current challenges. Christopher Peschel from Siemens Healthineers presented the legal framework on real-world data in a fun, but succinct manner. Isabelle Huys from KU Leuven and member of the EIT Heath ELSI Board emphasized the importance of keeping the ethical, legal and social issues in mind when submitting a project proposal. Johannes Tröger from the German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) explained how speech analysis could help to predict neurocognitive disorders like dementia, Alzheimer’s or depression.
In the World Café, participants discussed at Round Tables how to overcome challenges and later presented the highlights from the group discussions. The interactive format allowed participants to share their views on topics like sharing medical data, value from data in clinical and sub-clinical settings, Digital Eco-system, legal framework for processing data in the healthcare environment or fusing data science and simulation for understanding healthcare provision.
The event was an excellent way to kick-off EIT Health projects that foster activities in data-driven innovation and that create value from data in clinical and subclinical settings. Interested EIT Health partners can still submit Innovation Project proposals by 9 April 2018. For individuals not linked to an EIT Health partner, there is an opportunity to apply to the Wildcard initiative.
