EIT Health Catapult alumni NU-RISE raises €3M

23rd March 2023

EIT Health-supported start-up, NU-RISE, is celebrating having raised over €3M in a new round of investment. The Portuguese start-up provides real-time patient dose tracking for precise, autonomous, and safer radiation oncology.

Born in 2015 as a spin-out from the University of Aveiro, NU-RISE has developed an innovative solution which provides real-time patient dose tracking. The goal of the technology is to make radiotherapy safer and more accurate, and to reduce the number of sessions needed for tumour readmission.

NU-RISE is one of more than 30 Portuguese start-ups that have received support from EIT Health. Along with other success stories such as doDoc, iLof, Best Health4U, HydrUStent, PeekMed and C -mo Medical Solutions, they stood out for collectively raising around 350 million euros in external funding and almost 10 million euros in grants.[1]

NU-RISE started its EIT Health start-up journey in 2017, with the InnoStars Awards, steadily moving into more advanced programmes, such as Headstart. In 2019 the start-up applied for the EIT Health Catapult.

Despite not making it to the Catapult finals, the founders, Luís Moutinho and Joana Melo, received mentoring and access to investors across Europe, helping to prepare them to attract investment. They went on to participate in Bridgehead Europe and Gold Track in 2020. The same year NU-RISE obtained 100,000 euros funding from InnovID, Portugal Ventures.

“The support and pan-European exposure we have received through EIT Health programmes has been instrumental in our journey towards closing our latest investment round of three million euros,” said Luís.

Now, with the latest investment by Ged Ventures Portugal, Yellowstone Holding and Portugal Ventures, NU-RISE can continue working on new projects. They plan to internationalise their solution and contribute to improving the quality of radiation cancer treatments and the safety of the 12 million patients that could benefit from radiotherapy by 2035.[2]
