ProHerz gains DiGA status following EIT Health support

28th June 2023

A therapy companion for patients with heart failure developed through EIT Health project, ProHerz, has received DiGA status. Now officially recognised as a reimbursable digital health application by the German government, ProHerz empowers healthcare professionals (HCPs) to implement best in class, hybrid care concepts.

A regulatory framework to approve digital health solutions for reimbursement came into force in Germany in 2019, as part of a broader Digital Healthcare Act. Under the framework, approved digital health applications, known as DiGA, can be prescribed by healthcare providers to German patients. Patients are then reimbursed for the cost by health insurers. The framework ensures that the 73 million people insured in Germany’s statutory health insurance system [1] can access digital treatment.

ProHerz’s solutions are expected to improve survival rates, health, quality of life, and overall patient safety, for heart failure patients. They also may have the potential to improve the structure, processes, and guidance compliance around heart failure treatment.

EIT Health supported ProHerz’s development through innovation project funding. The team was selected for this funding following their participation in our DiGiInnovation programme which helps start-ups get their digital health apps reimbursed in Europe.

EIT Health innovation project funding helped ProCarement, the start-up behind the solution, to grow its business strategically. Together with project partners, Sanofi and Digital Pharma Lab, we empowered ProHerz to navigate the regulatory landscape and work towards reimbursement status.

ProCarement’s CEO, Sebastian Eckl, described the pivotal role EIT Health’s support has played in their journey towards this milestone: “Without EIT Health’s help aligning our clinical study with the necessary requirements from reimbursement, we may have struggled to access that important milestone. We’re delighted to have now achieved DiGA status and are excited to see wider uptake of our technology across German as a result of this key achievement.”

Would you like your digital health app reimbursed in Europe? Applications for our DiGiInnovation programme will reopen again from 10 July – 20 September.  Learn more and find out how to apply.
