A learning community driving Value-Based Healthcare Implementation
The Challenge
Despite the growing adoption of value-based healthcare (VBHC), many hospitals face challenges in translating its principles into practice. Key hurdles include establishing Integrated Practice Units (IPUs), optimizing care pathways, implementing cultural and organisational change, and leveraging real-world evidence to improve patient outcomes. Addressing these challenges is essential to accelerating the shift towards a more patient-centred, outcome-driven healthcare system.
Project Overview
The Value Catalyst is a global initiative bringing together hospitals committed to learning from each other and sharing best practices to drive VBHC implementation. The learning community was initiated in 2024 by Prof. Paul van der Nat & Dr. Dorine van Staalduinen from Santeon, the Netherlands. This collaborative network focuses on:
- Organisational redesign to align hospital structures with VBHC principles
- Cultural change to support transformation in healthcare delivery
- Real-world evidence to optimise patient pathways and improve outcomes
Through regular and structured knowledge exchange and the exchange of shared best practices, the Value Catalyst aims to accelerate the transition to VBHC, helping hospitals implement change more effectively. Among others, the gathered information and practical hands-on insights are externally shared in white- and scientific papers.
Objectives
- Strengthen international collaboration to accelerate VBHC adoption.
- Promote organisational and cultural shifts that enable VBHC implementation.
- Utilise real-world evidence to refine care pathways and improve patient outcomes.
- Facilitate best-practice exchange to enhance healthcare delivery.
- Develop practical, actionable, and hands-on insights for hospitals on implementing VBHC.
- Foster transparency and trust within the community to support long-term transformation and collaboration.
EIT Health’s Role
EIT Health Belgium-Netherlands supports the Value Catalyst as part of its mission to drive healthcare innovation and improve patient outcomes in Europe. By fostering international collaboration and supporting hospitals in adopting VBHC methodologies, EIT Health helps advance a necessary shift in how healthcare is delivered.
EIT Health has previously contributed to the VBHC landscape through its Think Tank report, “Implementing Value-Based Healthcare in Europe: Handbook for Pioneers“, which outlines key steps for healthcare providers to successfully implement VBHC. Our involvement in the Value Catalyst builds on this foundation, ensuring that hospitals have the knowledge and support to implement lasting change.
