2020 Think Tank topic: AI and healthcare transformation

6th July 2020

Round Tables to explore ‘Workforce and Organisational Transformation with AI – Enacting Change’

This year’s Think Tank Round Table Series launches with the topic of Workforce and Organisational Transformation with AI – Enacting Change. Round Tables will begin on 15 September with the first meeting taking place in Poland, and subsequently in Spain, Denmark and France with online events for Germany, UK-Ireland and Belgium-Netherlands throughout the summer and autumn. Bringing together experts and leaders from across the healthcare spectrum, the Round Tables have become recognised for delivering thought-provoking discussion, insightful ideas and tangible proposals to bring improvements within the healthcare sector. This year will be no exception as they focus on artificial intelligence (AI); a topic that remains high on the healthcare innovation agenda.

Each year, the Think Tank explores and assesses the most pressing topics impacting healthcare today. Round Tables held around Europe gather expertise, ideas and new approaches in various regions making up, collectively, a pan European viewpoint and set of recommendations.

AI is an area in which EIT Health have been increasingly involved as a key focus for future healthcare innovation. EIT Health partnered with McKinsey & Company in the development of a Europe-wide report: ‘Transforming healthcare with AI: The impact on the workforce and organisations’, which explores the impact of AI on healthcare practitioners. Published in March 2020, it outlines the implications and obstacles for scaling AI in healthcare organisations and systems.

The 2020 Round Table Series will now build on this report to identify potential solutions and outline a plan of action at national level to fully embrace the potential of AI and encourage its adoption in healthcare. The Round Tables will be chaired by three experts; Charlotte Stix, Dr Farzana Rahman and Zineb Miriam Nouns.

Charlotte Stix is the Coordinator for the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence, as well as an expert to the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on neurotechnologies and Fellow to the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, University of Cambridge. In addition, she is currently pursuing a PhD at the Eindhoven University of Technology, researching the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence.

Dr Farzana Rahman is a Consultant Radiologist with expertise in AI, strategy and policy. She was the former national head of data and digital strategy at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and a clinical advisor at NHS Digital. She is an author of national UK guidelines on AI in healthcare and an international guest speaker on this topic.

Zineb Miriam Nouns is a trained clinician with an academic career in Medical Education prior to her role in healthcare management. She currently is the Vice President for Human Development of Europe´s largest hospital provider, the Fresenius Helios Hospitals Group in Berlin, Germany.

The Round Table Meetings will focus on national action plans for AI adoption including:

  • Clinical Leadership
  • Rethinking education and skills and investment in new roles and talent
  • Strengthening data quality, governance, security and interoperability
  • Regulation and policy making
  • Liability and managing risk
  • Funding/reimbursement

Details of the full Round Table Series can be found in the events section.
