Oncommunities: Online cancer support communities
Cancer sufferers and their families face many economic and psychological burdens. Oncommun unites cancer survivors in an online community.
In addition to the psychological burden on patients and their families, cancer has a profound economic burden. The cost of cancer in Europe, including treatment expenses and loss in productivity, has been put at nearly €200 billion a year.
The Oncommun cancer care tool merges social networks, videoconferencing and monitoring to provide educational and psycho-social care interventions for cancer survivors. The programme aims to reduce the impact of cancer by facilitating access to healthcare and by matching cancer survivors who have had therapeutic “mirror” experiences. These mirror experiences will be matched using algorithms to pair mentors with mentees.
This holistic approach is intended to reduce sick leave by one third, improve quality of life for 60% of cancer survivors and optimise healthcare resources.
